COURSE CONTENT
The
course consists of a series of workshops. To
be certified, participants are required to complete
four (4) full units in addition to TM301A
- Emerging Technologies in Education (1
unit).
Module
301A – Emerging Technologies in Education
Emerging technology refers to cutting-edge technologies
which are not usually developed with education
in mind. In this session participants will learn
how to identify these technologies and adapt
them for use in education. Many people start
with the technology and then try to make the
curriculum fit. In this workshop, we will start
with the curriculum and make the technology
fit. We will examine many types of current and
emerging technology to find out how they best
fit into enhancing the curriculum at your school.
Duration: first half hour session of each

301B – Creating Effective Educational
Websites with Dreamweaver
In this workshop participants will learn the
basics of using Macromedia Dreamweaver. They
will learn to build great-looking web sites
with Dreamweaver. This HTML editor simplifies
the process of creating Web pages by giving
you complete control over the code. Dreamweaver's
visual layout tools allow you to design a page
and then tweak the source code with Dreamweaver's
"roundtrip HTML" feature. With this
dynamic package you can develop online courses
or a fantastic and useful school website.

Module 301C – Publishing for the Internet
In this hands-on workshop, participants will
learn to apply e-book software and other packages
in creating interactive educational activities
and materials to support instruction. e-books
are texts or documents that have been converted
to a special digital format. Discover how to
use free e-book software to create your own
e-books and publications, and to locate and
work with existing e-documents. e-book features
include advanced navigation, multicoloured bookmarks,
dictionary interaction, and whole book search,
multicoloured highlighting, and integrated text-to-speech
with synchronized highlighting.

301D – Digital Image Processing for Educators
At the completion of this workshop, participants
will learn how to: use a digital camera and
scanner; use image editor software; import images
into other software; prepare graphics for web
pages; obtain high-quality colour printouts
by cropping, resizing, changing formats, and
improving image quality; correct faults; retouch
damaged photos using the smudge tool and copying
and dragging patches. Participants will also
learn about the relationship between image size
and resolution; the meaning of brightness and
contrast; the image histogram; the meaning of
graphics file formats; the role of compression;
and multi-layer images, text labelling, and
special effects.

301E – Making Movies with iMovie
This workshop will help iMovie-using educators
uncover secret techniques for producing sophisticated
videos with simple tools. Participants will
learn tips and tricks for doing multiple camera
shoots; picture-in-picture, chroma-key (blue
screen), masking, and other powerful video editing
features, all within iMovie and low-cost extensions.
New iMovie add-ons, models of terrific digital
video, and analysis of video effects will be
explored. Workshop participants may even make
a music video. Strategies for data storage,
compression, and publishing (on CD, Web and
DVD) will be shared with participants comfortable
with basic iMovie use.

301F – The Virtual Borderless Classroom
In this session participants will learn how
instant messaging, chat facilities and videoconferencing
can support the teaching and learning environment
in your classroom and school. Virtual communication
technologies should be meaningful, relate to
the curriculum, and provide access to resources
that would not normally be available in the
classroom. This hands-on workshop will explore
both the pedagogical and technical considerations
involved in planning and carrying out a successful
virtual class.

301G – The Wireless Classroom: Handhelds
in Education
PDAs, tablets PCs and cell phones are rapidly
taking over the modern classroom. In this workshop
participants will review software available
on the handheld computer in the curriculum areas
of Math, Science, Reading, Writing, Spelling,
and History. In each content area, participants
will develop methods of integrating handheld
technology into their existing curriculum. Participants
will learn how to develop assessment rubrics
to evaluate student growth and the effectiveness
of lessons created. Finally, participants will
use the internet to locate a variety of online
resources to support their work with handheld
computers.

301H – Using Technology to Enhance Learning
Paths
Learn how teachers can use multiple applications
to meet the individualized needs of their students.
Participants will explore how technology can
be used to evaluate student growth and plot
individualised learning paths for students with
different learning styles and abilities.

301I – Using the Power of Microsoft PowerPoint
Drive your point with power! PowerPoint is more
than a simple presentation tool. This hands-on
workshop will provide participants the opportunity
to create interactive multimedia and portfolios
with PowerPoint. Participants will learn to
create interactive lessons where the user interacts
with the media and uses it as a learning tool
rather than a simple viewing experience. Participants
will observe how to infuse the following enhancements
into PowerPoint presentations: synchronization
of sound and music to specific points in presentations;
incorporation of recently updated advanced animation
techniques; insertion of video clips/captured
video on to slides; addition of helpful hyperlinks
and navigation tools; publication of interactive
presentations as Web pages; creation of engaging
self running slides shows; and production of
exciting diagrams and organizational charts.

301J – Microsoft Excel: Beyond the Basics
Advanced features of Microsoft Excel will be
discussed in this workshop. Participants will
build upon existing beginner skills of Excel
by being introduced to advanced formatting techniques
and with using advanced formulas and functions.
Participants will also learn to create and enhance
charts, and to use Excel's data manipulation
features, including some examples for using
Excel in a classroom setting.

301K – The Paperless School Campus
In the information age, paper is out of fashion.
It is no longer a reasonable medium for storing
and distributing information. It has been stated
that 70 percent of school's waste is paper.
As administrators in today's educational system,
we are responsible for educational reform that
will bring to offices the potential of the technological
advances of recent years. Someday, school paper
mills will be as antiquated as rusting factories.
Does your school office have a plan for going
paperless, or even for less paper? If not, this
workshop is a must.

301L – Technology in Music Education
Learn how to: add sound to multimedia presentations;
digitising sounds with a microphone and from
a tape recorder; use of sound processing software
to edit, amplify, and filter sounds, remove
noise, display sounds graphically; change file
formats; and play sounds in Web pages and slide
shows. You will be able to download sounds from
the Internet and learn the file formats and
sound player programs for au, wav, aiff, mp3,
and midi files.

What resources are available for visually or
hearing impaired students? How can technology
help my students with learning disabilities?
Where can teachers go for information to support
special needs students? This workshop addresses
these and other questions.

301N– Using Technology to Enhance Literacy
Skills
Are you trying to improve your students' skills
in writing, reading, vocabulary, comprehension,
and fluency? Do you wish you had more access
to computer technology for your students? This
workshop will introduce you to features, software,
and strategies that can be used by teachers
and students to improve reading and writing
across the curriculum.

301O– Advanced Topics in Computer Networking
and Management
This workshop discusses the more advanced concepts
of networking administration such as security,
email, back-ups, addressing, filtering, firewalls,
Internet, WAN protocols, and network management.
Workshop participants should have an understanding
of Local Area Networking and some understanding
of Windows 2003.
